How the Sausage is Made

Recently, I was asked the following question by a listener of my podcast:

Hi Roberto. I’m a huge fan, and your show has inspired my friend and I to start our own podcast. As you seem to be as huge tech geeks as we are, we were hoping we could get some advice on how to properly host/stream/feed etc. a podcast, as you already obviously do. I know it may seem weird for a random listener to ask for tech support, but as the Internet isn’t much help, you were the first person I thought of.

So, I figured I go through my current hosting stack and how I go about “making the sausage” in this post. First off, let’s talk about hosting. Currently I’m hosting my files on the great podcast hosting service libsyn. I won’t go into what plan I’m using, but if you’re starting out, they make it really easy to do pretty much everything for a podcast.

For the site as it stand today, I’m hosting it on my blog on the great people of Squarespace. Good hosting provider and if you end up picking them as your site host, there are a ton of offer codes out there for 10% off the lifetime of your contract. Here’s one right now : nsfwshow.

The RSS feeds gets sent directly to Google’s Feedburner service. In fact, if you ever said to yourself “You know, I  can’t remeber what the link was for Feedburner,” try feeds.cosmicradio.tv. It’ll get you there :) . Within Feedburner is where the magic happens and all the iTunes appropriate tags get added from image art to description. Not only does this help in getting things up and running quickly, but if you ever move hosting providers (like I’m planning to for the podcast), it lets you keep a consistent link without having to redirect itunes. Plus, if you’re an advanced user and know what a “CNAME” is, you can point to the Google service and have an even more professional looking link.

As to getting on the iTunes store, simply sumbit and wait for approval. Once that’s all set, you’ll get a happy email from Apple along with a crucial link : iTunes Ping. Remeber to keep this link as it’ll allow you to tell iTunes when your podcast is updated. Though iTunes does this eventually, it can go faster if you ping it, so just make sure to do this once your RSS feed is updated.

Other than those things comes more of the production side of stuff. If anyone is interested, I’d be more than happy to post all that as well. Hope this helps any starting off in their podcasting endeavors.

Post a Day Entry 01

Hey everyone. I know it’s been… well forever since I’ve written a blog post, but I figure since it is National Blog Posting Month, I’ve decided it high time I started posting to this site again on a daily fashion. As a personal note, due to time, I’m technically a day behind, so one of these days you’ll hopefully see two posts to make up the deficit.
So what’s the topic for today’s post. How about what it is I’m currently working on
  1. For starters, I’m working on a new site. This will be my first professional site since College and it will be a bit more of a controlled situation. Its good to be back into the swing of coding and I’m way better than I was in my early days.
  2. I’m also working on a new resume site. Fully coded in Ruby utilizing the Sinatra framework, it should be a simple site with the ability to keep all my project links, job history, and public contact info in a database, able to push out the data in whatever format I see fit. The basic look is going to follow my now standard  ”8-bit” feel, utilizing things that seem to be me these days. All records will output to JSON. The contact will in addition to the JSON output also output to a VCARD, complete with my default “8-bit” me icon
  3. I’m also working on my first twitter app. I won’t go into details, but I will say it will utilize the streaming API. It will be coded fully using Ruby on Rails and allow me to learn the framework from top to bottom.

So, as you can see, I’m in a heavy coding mode. I’ll try to update on each of these projects. As for this blog, expect random topic posts. Hope you’ve enjoyed this update in content.

Happy Birthday Pac-man

This month marks Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary.  When I heard about this, I started to think of when it was that I played my first game of Pac-Man. I can’t. Pac-Man’s become such a cornerstone to my gaming life that  to ask that question would be to ask someone their first word : It’s just something someone doesn’t think about.  But ever since I played that game, that little yellow sprite has held a position in my gaming trivia and mind. Happy Birthday Pac-Man. May all your scores be high and ghosts be blue.

Thoughts on Live Blogging:

So as its apparent, the live blogging test failed due to the obvious problem : battery life. If I were to do this again in the future, I will need an external battery for the iPhone.

An Evening in Austin With Kevin Smith

Hey everyone. Last night, I went to a Q & A session with Kevin Smith at The Long Center here in Austin. The night was great and I loved every minute of it. This video was recorded about 45 minutes after the event, showing my thoughts on the night plus some brief thoughts on the upcoming SXSW. Enjoy:

SXSW

So it’s February and ,as of this posting, it is four weeks away from South By Southwest (SXSX) Interactive. So what does this mean for you, dear reader. Well, as this will be my first year, there is a huge potential with my twitter feed having a ton of SXSW specific posts and the like, from Re-tweets (RTs) and check-ins from various other social websites and applications that I use. It may get a little too crazy and maybe a bit annoying for those not at the conference. Granted, I will try my best not to bog it down, but I make no promises, as I tend to get excited when I’m at these sorts of things. So, with that in mind, here are a few tips to limit my tweets to not be bothersome to you:

  1. Stop Following me for a limited time : This is probably the easiest and most direct way to get rid of the potential twitter spam. Sure, I may be sad to lose any followers, but it is a valid way to get rid of the wave that may come.
  2. Use a twitter client that filters posts : I plan to use the hashtag of #sxsw during the whole conference, so if it has that hashtag and you don’t care about the conference, filter away

This list may be revised and added to at a later date, but for now, realize that the conference is coming and that I am excited by it. That’s all for now.
