Memoirs of an English Major

Thanks Leo

I have many inspirations for my work and for the most part, I’m well aware where they come from. Today, it was pretty much a thought that has been floating around my head for quite some time. This is hack poetry at best, but at least I recorded it. So, if you want to read it, read on. Else, hit play.

I’m always third tier

Another week, another series of posts. I was going over the states the other day and noticed I there was a decline in hits. Though this isn’t a terrible alarming fact, it was just something I was noticing that I am fairly consistent with my ranking and have noticed that my site is general a third tier to fifth tier blog. Not at the top, but not one to overlook either. I feel very confident that these sorts of inroads are coming after some time and that what once started out as a writing experiment may turn out to be something more. I do thank all of my readers on my site and feel that the month of may will be a rewarding and prosperous one. The tide is changing and I feel like I am finally riding it.

If there is one career path I have pondered over time and time again, it is that of copy write. I’ve always felt I would good at it, but never had the chance to do it professionally. Since this is the case, I figure I give it a go with the blog here. If the site I write about like the copy I write, feel free to use it on your site or anyone else, no link back required. So, for a first, I will start with Catherine Sharp’s site, Sharp Words

Cyberpunk story

“Replicants are like any other machine. They’re either a benefit or a hazard. If they’re a benefit, it’s not my problem.” - Deckard

I’ve always been a huge fan of cyberpunk and figured it was about time I began working on a cyberpunk story. I’m quite sure where it’s going to exactly go, but I do know I want to make it very dark, noir, gritty, and tech. It’s heavily inspired by Bladerunner, Snow Crash, and Gene Hunt. It’s a strange combination, but that’s where I’m getting my inspiration. I will soon return to my other stories, but for now, here’s what I have so far. It’s extremely rough and very short, but I am planning of working on it all week. Anyway, here it is.

New Week, new concept

It’s a brand new week and a brand new task. After last week’s writing tasks, I think it triggered the muse inside of me to once again delve into the world of fiction. Much like last week, I will be composing something new each day. Before I go into tonight’s post, I have a proposition to ask all of my readers. If you haven’t noticed yet, I don’t post on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. It’s not because I’m lazy or anything, it’s just my weekends are my busiest times and I can’t get a chance to post. So, in the same vein as guest posting, I have come up with a new concept entitled Creative Content Friday’s. Essentially, if you’ve made something creative, I’ll post it. There there some guidelines though:

  1. Nothing hateful or hurtful. Also, nothing pornographic, though I’ll be the judge when it is tasteful and when it’s something that belongs in an issue of Penthouse
  2. Works must contain a small summary and rating. I’m going to allow a wide range here, so please make my job a little easier. If your work is not meant for the younger audience, let me know ahead of time so I can preface this.
  3. Video’s must be either a Youtube or Revver link or any other flash based player. I can’t accept anything else. Audio must be either an mp3 or m4a.
  4. Links must get to me by 12:00 AM GMT Thursday to make it for that week.
  5. Make sure to submit it to creativefridays@rvillegas.org with “Creative Fridays” in the subject line

I am not limiting it to writing. If you’ve made a flash game, short film, or some great artwork, I’ll post it up here, linking back to a site of your choice, most likely your own or where the work is held. So, get those creative juices flowing and get some free promotion. Well, that’s all for now. Tune in tomorrow when I post some fiction. Till then, enjoy.

Why can’t more coppers be like Gene Hunt

“I’m everywhere, Bolly. I was needed and I was there” - Gene Hunt

It’s no secret that I love Life on Mars and it’s spin off Ashes to Ashes. Next to Monty Python, it’s now one of my top UK television programs.  And with the last episode of Ashes to Ashes series one already well in the books, I felt it was about time I wrote about the show in what may be my most intensive writing week ever. From Monday to Thursday, I will write on and about the show in a variety of fashion, not only because I feel the series is deep enough for the task, but also to challenge myself to get back into a research mode of writing, one I haven’t done in quite some time now. This is all leading up to a paper I plan to work on, complete with due date, sources, and all the things that can go into a academic paper, minus the college class tied to it. Tomorrow, I will go into more detail on the challenge itself. For the most part, I will try to stay far from reveling the plot, but it will help to have watched the show. For now, the post.

I’m a huge fan of Gene Hunt. Honestly, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the whole hard nose policing he practices, or possible his flare for language. Whatever the reason, he’s one of the few characters that I can’t quite fit into a specific place, even more so after the finale of Ashes to Ashes. Allow me to elaborate

Writer’s Block aka What I do when I’m not writing

I’m somewhat of an oddity and because of this, I wear many creative hats. Some weeks, my thoughts are purely on writing, as was the case in the previous weeks. The ideas just flowed from my head right across my keyboard. Every sentence felt like pure gold and nothing was beyond my grasp. At the end of the week, I had a whole slew of stories planned, plotted, and even more ideas planned. However, this week the ideas seemed to slow slightly. Perhaps I am a little written out or am suffering from a slight case of writers block. Most writers take a break from their work and relax. What do I do? Much like the oddity I am, I let my other passion take over and see where that takes me. That my friends is my programming side. Allow me to elaborate as to why

Fiction story part 2

Writing : A Hidden Skill

“Every why hath a wherefore” - Dromio of Syracuse

Well, I have completed the finishing touches and completed the final draft for Claire’s short story contest. It was possibly the strangest and most cathartic writing experience to date. I will not publish it here until the contest it over, so you’ll have to wait till the end to read it. As of this moment, I have no idea how I will do against the rest of the writers and can’t wait to see what others have come up with. I can’t wait till this is over.

Writing for me has become possible my “ace up my sleeve” skill that seems to help me in my journey through life, more so these days than my web programming skills and slightly more than my computer skills. I’ll explain.

Writing and PageFour

“A good book is the precious lifeblood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life” - John Milton

Over the course of the past two weeks, I have written and created four separate drafts on my short story, each one longer that the last. I’m fine with the word length, but I feel if I make one more revision, it may become longer that I had originally intended, so I am stopping at this moment with my final draft. I will make a couple of grammar checks and pacing revision, but as of now, the short story is complete. Once the contest is over, I will repost the story here so that all can read. It’s been a great process and I really couldn’t have written as I have without the use of PageFour. It is a great piece of software. It just works for me as a writer.

Entrecard is pulling its weight

Today, I decided to put on my blogger cap and looked at the numbers for February. Even though I don’t consider myself a pro blogger in the traditional sense, I do wonder if my site is getting readership and if I am connecting with the wider population of the web. Well, the numbers for last month have quite impressed me, as this was the month where Entrecard was in full force and it shows when my hits doubled from January. Even though I am still well under the radar for hits, I am grateful that there is some traffic and that I am connecting with other writers online in various ways. All in all, I think Entrecard has proven a good feature on my site and I will look for other ways to lead in readers, but there is a dilemma I must face. When does it go against the whole design?
